The Caitlin Clark Effect
I consider myself a casual sports fan. Enjoying an occasional basketball game, I am hardly astute at analyzing a foul from a play. I get the general gist of things, but not the specifics. All that changed in May 2023, when I and much of America discovered Caitlin Clark, the sharpshooter guard from the University of Iowa, competing in the NCAA March Madness games.
Playing razzle dazzle basketball, Ms. Clark wowed sold-out crowds and television audiences with her spectacular play. Overnight, I became a fan. Now, while watching a game, I find myself yelling coaching directives at my television, shutting one eye at a crucial free throw, and jumping up with enthusiasm at a three-point basket. I even know a moving screen from a pick and roll.
From schoolgirls to gray-haired seniors, teenage boys to middle-aged soccer moms, everyone was cheering for Ponytail Pete, so named when Clark broke Pistol Pete Maravich’s record. He was the all-time leading scorer in men’s college basketball. And it wasn’t just your average Joe fan like me who took notice. She caught the eye of basketball royalty too. LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Steph Curry came to watch her play, because no one ruled the court quite like Caitlin. She hit logo threes and delivered behind-the-back passes with confidence and flair.
Upon entering the WNBA as the first-round draft pick for the Indiana Fever, Clark skeptics weighed in. Reality is coming, one basketball veteran warned, while another doubted her college skills could prevail against the professional players of the WNBA. Caitlin proved them wrong, as she was voted Rookie of the Year, shattering longstanding records throughout her initial season.
Meanwhile, attendance numbers kept growing. Fever home games sold out quickly, just like their away games. Owners were forced to relocate to larger NBA venues to accommodate seating demand. Whether at home or on the road, every matchup felt like a home game for the Fever.
Recently the WNBA, now just called the W, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary. For much of that time, the League has struggled to find an audience and recognition. But change came with Clark’s arrival. Having Caitlin on the court guaranteed bonanza television ratings. Revenue shot up while merchandise sales skyrocketed. Many owners and managers called it The Caitlin Clark Effect.
That did not sit well with many veteran coaches and players, who felt she was undeserving of the attention, sponsorships and brand deals. Hard fouls rained down upon her as she received 17% of all flagrant calls in her rookie season. Naysayers declared she was overrated, while others accused the WNBA of purposely downplaying Caitlin’s achievements. But one well respected W veteran spoke up, advising the players that a rising tide lifts all boats. Her message was to enjoy the benefits of Clark’s presence in the league; higher salaries, chartered flights, first-class accommodations, and finally, the national spotlight.
At a recent press conference, Caitlin’s coach referred to her star player as a maestro because of how she orchestrates the game much like a show. Caitlin’s court vision is superior while her basketball IQ is off the charts. This allows her to see the play before anyone else. She maintains a certain bravado on the court, urging the fans to their feet to cheer on her team. Yet her demeanor at post-game press conferences is reflective and humble, praising her teammates and competitors while acknowledging her own shortcomings.
Now in her third season (she was sidelined for much of her second season due to injuries) the phenom breaks a record every time she is on the court. She recently played nine games in which she scored 20+ points and 10+ assists. The rest of the league combined has only played four such games this season. To give more perspective, in merely two and half years, Caitlin is shattering records that took her rivals entire careers to achieve.
Caitlin Clark is undeniably a generational talent. While many acknowledge this fact, others remain resentful of her stellar accomplishments and fame. Her stated desire is to grow the game of basketball while inspiring young girls around the country to play competitively. Along the way, Caitlin has captured my attention and millions of others as we root for her and her team’s success while enjoying the other talented players in the WNBA.
